Shadows of the Past

In Lüderitz, on the windswept shores of Shark Island, the Herero and Nama communities gathered from April 21 to April 23, 2023, to honor their ancestors and demand justice. This memorial is more than a remembrance; it is an assertion of identity and resilience, a refusal to allow history’s violence to be forgotten.

The images captured during this event reflect a struggle that has endured for over a century. A memorial stone, unveiled with the support of the Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) and led by the Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) and the Nama Traditional Leaders Association (NTLA), stands as a symbol of both mourning and resistance.

This work is a reflection of the ongoing pursuit for acknowledgment and reparations. It is an attempt to illuminate the persistence of memory, the weight of loss, and the collective strength that continues to rise from it. The commemorations are not just about remembering the past, but about shaping the future—one where justice is no longer delayed.
