About

Julia Runge is a esteemed documentary photographer and filmmaker with over 15 years of experience working across Germany and Southern Africa. Her work is defined by an empathetic and ethical approach, capturing intimate stories that explore social structures, identity, and cultural realities—particularly within Namibia.

She graduated in 2015 from the Ostkreuz School of Photography in Berlin, where she gained recognition for her acclaimed project Basterland. This body of work later evolved into a powerful documentary film, which she co-produced in 2022 in collaboration with arte/ZDF. Her photography focuses primarily on portraiture, using a distinctive visual language to address themes of social engagement, cultural identity, and the diverse realities of life on the African continent. Her work has received numerous awards, been featured in leading national and international publications, and exhibited in countries such as France, Uganda, Nigeria, China, the United States, and Switzerland.

In 2023, Julia took on the role of Director at the Windhoek-based media production company Obsessive Media and simultaneously founded Reframe Kollektiv e.V. in Berlin—an organization dedicated to fostering photography, journalism, and media in Southern Africa through collaboration and cultural dialogue.

Julia’s work often highlights underrepresented voices and marginalized communities. Her recent focus includes topics such as gender-based violence, queer identities, and the politics of visibility. Through portraiture and long-term storytelling, she sheds light on issues of injustice, resilience, and societal transformation—always with a strong commitment to ethical representation and dialogue.
